Ever since Alvin and his brothers debuted in 1958, movie, TV, and music producers have been able to count on the money-making combination of precocious animated rodents, kid-friendly plot lines and, most importantly, chart-topping pop music delivered in those trademark chipmunk vocals. The latest installment in the adventure is Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel, the follow-up to 2007's hugely successful live-action/animation offering. To parents, the film is likely to feel like an innocuous but somewhat lazy cash grab, but kids (especially younger ones) will laugh and thrill on cue to the munks' latest exploits. WATCH NOW

Brace yourself for the first 10 minutes of How to Train Your Dragon. They're among the most chaotic ever seen in an animated feature, as Scottish-accented Vikings bellow and grunt while warding off a full-scale night attack on their village by flying fire-breathing dragons. All the while our protagonist (a boy named Hiccup) cynically provides commentary with a crash course on the various characters and breeds of dragons--the introductions come so fast amid the dark lighting and shaky "camera" movement, it leaves you wondering which Viking or dragon he's referring to as they run/fly by. I feared the whole movie would be as numbingly busy and confusing. WATCH NOW

He introduces himself, simply, as the Ghost. He has no family, no attachments. We never know his name. He makes his living by chewing on the lives of bolder, braver beings, hovering and hearing as his subjects spill their secrets. Then, like a medieval familiar, he takes their stories and spells them out, retouched, reshaped, reformed. He keeps to the shadows of the text--a hidden voice in the vowels, barely whispered.

Relationships don't always read like Valentine's Day candy. Young lovers who once exchanged chalky hearts bearing the words "you're sweet" and "be mine" sometimes wind up rooting around for pieces that read "you jerk" or "get lost."

Over the years the same questions get asked of Desmond Tutu, the archbishop, Nobel Peace Prize winner, and veteran of the moral movement that ended apartheid in South Africa: "How can you be so hopeful after witnessing so much evil?" "Why are you so sure goodness will triumph in the end?"
This book is his answer. Now, more than any other time in history, our world needs this message: that we are made for goodness and it is up to us to live up to our destiny.
