South Africa Church a Haven for Some a Hazard for Others

sahaven.jpg
A Methodist church in the heart of Johannesburg is stirring up controversy. It's provided shelter for thousands of migrants from troubled Zimbabwe, but its grimy corridors are not the image South Africa wants to present during the upcoming World Cup. So, local authorities are stepping up a clean-up campaign.

Love Is a Verb takes his teaching to the next level. Rather than a typical relationship self-help book filled with lengthy explanations of principles and techniques, it is a compilation of true stories displaying love in action...

Christianity Today Movie Review: Edge of Darkness

edge_of_darkness_ver2.jpgMartin Campbell directed a little movie called Casino Royale--perhaps you've heard of it?--and it turned out to be a big enough hit that the powers-that-be gave him a bit of creative wiggle room for his next project, allowing him to break out of the 007 franchise and make the movie he really wanted to make. I say good for Campbell; his Casino was, for my money, easily the most stylish of the Bond movies, but also the one with the most heart.

Christianity Today Movie Review: To Save a Life

trailer-to-save-a-life.jpg
When I walked out of the theatre after seeing To Save a Life, I was pretty positive about this teen flick. This outreach project of California's New Song Community Church has the best production values I've seen from a church-made feature film, tells a good story, and captures both youth group culture and high school life pretty authentically. The movie is poignant, often funny and filled with memorable scenes. But in the weeks since I first saw it, I've been bothered by some weaknesses and unintended messages that have dampened my praise and recommendation.
